On 15th November, I visited the exhibition for <The World of Tim Burton> in the Design Museum because I have interested in Tim Burton's works such as <Corpse Bride> and <Alice in Wonderland>.
He has been well known as his own "eccentric" characters and direction and it doesn't make the people get offensive. In this point, he is one of my favorite director since I was interested in the animation and movie, however I did wonder how he can make these direction which are giving the feeling of newness and fun to the audience. Then, I could perceive the fundamental reason of that during I appreciated this exhibition.
As we can see these figures above, there are a ghost of soldier who has a hole in the chest due to bombard, the giant snake that has another head in its mouth, and the ghost seems like mummy. These characteristic would be cruel and freaky for every people, but they are not close to the realistic. Since there is a sense of distance from the realistic, rather, freshness and fun can be felt rather than discomfort and fear for the audience.
An uncanny valley, for example, humans instinctively feel more displeased than they do not resemble humans in a clumsy manner. Most of Tim Burton's characters have exaggerated or ridiculous appearances like Japanese animation, a little different from the real human figure.
So, we could not feel uncomfortable when the character's legs are broken or their eyes sticking out and fell into the soup.
This realization will be a key part of the eyeball in the soup project.
