After 2D Animatic works
As the person who created the story, I created guidelines for the final video to be implemented with storyboards and 2D animations, and I wanted to create a storyboard and animation with better quality than before by reflecting what I learned in the previous unit and the feedback I received. So, while in previous unit projects, I focused more on the character's performance and didn't pay much attention to the environment or location, in this storyboard, I considered not only the character's performance but also the location, angle, and view. I studied by analyzing the screens while watching dramas to figure out how to effectively show tension, anxiety, helplessness, and stability, thinking about who should be seen as weak, who should be seen as strong, and who should be focused on.
I wanted to capture the relationship between Min and Brian in the story and the intended direction on the screen, but since I had to make the video within 90 seconds, the storyboard and 2D animation scenes I made couldn't be implemented in 3D, which was the most regrettable thing about this unit. Still, I think it's fortunate that I was able to produce the final animation video based on the initial log-line, which was the story of a girl going through an ice age blizzard to save her friend.
About Team Work
I could feel that each person had a different image in their head about the unique natural disaster called the Ice Age, and I was able to collect various reference images for environment design. I am better at 2D work (character design, storyboard production, 2D animation production) than 3D modeling and rigging, and I am interested in creating stories, so I was in charge of the creator, director, and storyboard in this project unit team. Of course, in the process of creating a log-line and script for performances and detailed settings, I was able to further develop the background of the story with Chia-En's ideas (montage technique, riding a scooter) and the tutor's critical questions (props and environment settings) and reflect the feedback on the environment design and prop design.
The person I communicated with the most smoothly in the team was Chia-En. In the beginning, when we were making the script, we talked seriously about the story's progression and presented good references. I was the only Korean in the team, while the rest of the team were from the Chinese-speaking world (Chia-En was from Taiwan), so they could communicate comfortably in Mandarin, but I had relatively limited communication with them in English. That's why he often volunteered to act as an interpreter between me and the other members.
After Jiantao had made the scenes that Min is riding scooter on the snow way, Shiyuan, Chia-En, and Qiyun have modified or added some more details of character's movement like breaking window via stone. And Shiyuan have added the character's vioice but also the sounds of the animation that was amazing work, but I had asked to her to change the background music in the second half because I thought it should gradually become dark atmosphere at the end. As soon as I asked to her that, she changed it and uploaded on our google drive well.
Making Ending Credit & 3D Final Work
After checking Shiyuan's edited video, I made the ending credit that has cookie video in 2D via Premier Pro. During this process, I could know what my team mates have worked for this unit project since they let me know what was their professional part.
Also, as I mentioned, I felt regretful that I couldn't capture the scenes I wanted to include in 3D. However, I could add the scenes on the ending credit as "Cookie video". Although it was just made of 2D, it became a story that well explained the reason for Min's final emptiness and sadness, and ironically maximized these emotions.
